Which Digital Camera Should I Buy?

What is the best camera to buy? When I get asked that question, I usually look at the speaker to see if I can find a good analogy with which to answer. With a chef, I ask "What is the best meat or the best vegetable?" With a pharmacist, the question might become "What is the best painkiller?" If I'm not sure, I might ask "What is the best car to drive?"

Because, of course, there is no one single camera that is right for everybody. There are hundreds of cameras and lens combinations on the market today. So you need to think about what kind of pictures you want to take, where and when and how often, and, frankly, how much you can afford to spend, not only on the camera, but on the accessories. You can get started in digital photography for $50, or you can buy one camera body and one lens for $50,000. Most people will not be comfortable at either extreme.

So this is why I have started an e-book on this subject, and also developed a one-hour program, to help you choose which camera to buy. The eBook should be on sale some year; the presentation will be offered in person in the Greater Toronto Area. If you want me to run the course in a location outside the GTA, where you can find ten or twenty interested students and a peaceful place to talk, please contact me. Otherwise, it'll be available online, again: someday.

And, if that's too much trouble, then at least check out my Photography Resources page!.

Meanwhile, a brief summary (not necessarily up-to-date) appears at trustedreviews.com. If you're fairly sure you want a DSLR, hit CreativeLive.com to check out this free video course How to choose your first DSLR camera for beginners.
