Ian Darwin: Nikon-Specific Photo Resources

I'm a Nikon guy from since pre-history, OK? I do realize and appreciate that Canon, Sony, Pentax, Leica, Phase One and others make good cameras too. And that they all "adapt" ideas from each other. Nice. But life is only one lifetime long. So if you want resources for another brand, go search the web.

This material needs updating, sorry!

Canada/USA Nikon Warranty

There is sometimes a bit of friction between the two different operating divisions (Nikon Canada and Nikon USA) and their customers over the issue of warranty or gray-market. You might want to familiarize yourself with these links before buying: for Canada; for USA. The bottom line seems to be that if you buy in Canada, the US will treat your camera as 'gray market' and vice versa, which really sucks since our two countries' electrical and safety codes are pretty much harmonized. (Nikon Canada has to provide manuals in English and in Quebecois for sale in Canada; presumably Nikon USA provides manuals in English and in Spanish?). Nonetheless, lacking anything more definitive, I'd suggest only buying expensive camera bodies at a local dealer that is listed on the Nikon web site (that's for Canada only, sorry).

On the other hand, I definitely would consider going on eBay or Amazon for a $50 kit lens, or a strobe light, or anything else that - on the off chance it failed in normal service - would be cheaper to replace than to do without for a couple of weeks while they argued with you over the jurisdiction of the warranty. Somewhere in between there's a balance point, but, as the saying goes, "your mileage may vary."
